488AD (Part Three): Bayeux's Liberation & Madoc's Betrayal

Having forced open the gates, Sirs Dylan and Erec burst through with Squire Morlak upon the Franks on the other side. Although with Roderick and his men joining from behind the forces would become even, the skirmish was hard work, but steadily they defeated their foe - Morlak even having the cheek to down not only his opponent but Roderick's too.

As the Frankish footmen were overthrown, a small group of Frankish riders wielding spears bore down on them. Again these were dispatched mostly with ease, although Erec smashed his lance against the ground rather than his enemy by mistake. Somehow he managed through great horsemanship to maneouver his horse out of the way of the return charge and knock his opponent into unconsciousness as passing…

Having overthrown the Franks and realising the city was liberated, the knights and Morlak went on a looting spree (Morlak attempted to loot a new squire as well, but to no joy).

Eventually Roderick summoned them to accompany him to the Market Place where Praetor Syagrius swept in on horseback, dismounting to a pompous bugle blast before Prince Madoc and called him to press on now to Rouen to. To everyone's astonishment I gather the Prince declared that they would not, instead he and his men would be leaving Frankish shores and heading back to Llogres! Despite Syagrius' protestations that his Father had promised, Madoc insisted that he was not his father and that they were leaving at once. Which they did. This stunned Erec, Morlak and Dylan, although they were pleased to head home with their loot. Why had the Prince betrayed Uther's promise to Syagrius?

On the boat they rejoined the recovering Gaelavin and headed back home to plan how they were to spend their new riches (especially Erec who's land had done extremely well for him during the year). Rumour from the Royal Winter Court was that in the following year Uther would be paying Duke Gorlois of Cornwall a 'visit' to bring him back in line. Meanwhile in the Salisbury Court, Morlak was awarded knighthood by Earl Roderick in light of his stirling efforts at Bayeux.
